Piazza di Santa Croce

The enormous rectangular “breathing space” of Piazza Santa Croce, built in front of the Franciscan Basilica of Santa Croce, is the product of a 13th-14th century urban plan whose mediaeval origins can still be evidently seen in many of the buildings nearby its perimeter. The two most famous palaces in the Piazza of Santa Croce are: the Palazzo dell'Antella, which originally belonged to the Cerchi family, who had been the leaders of the "White" Guelph party and the Palazzo Cocchi-Serristori, which is an original version of a 14th century house carried out by Baccio d'Agnolo towards the end of the 15th century. The note Palazzo Cocchi-Serristori was built by the famous Italian architect Parigi, who also worked for the construction of the Pitti Palace belonged to one of the most important family in Tuscany: the Medici Family.
