The Rificolona in Florence

Book a stay in Florence for 7th September 2009. The city will host the Rificolona, a celebration mainly for children, which is held on the eve of the Madonna’s Nativity, in Piazza Santissima Annunziata. Some people believe that the Rificolona stems from the arrival in Florence of the farmers and mountain populations from Casentino and Pistoia, looking to celebrate the religious event in the Florentine church and making the most of the possibility to sell their products at the fair held in the same square on 8th September.

The farmers had torches and lanterns with them for lighting their way into the city. The first “rificolone” (paper puppets with a light inside) were made by the inhabitants of Florence, inspired by those lanterns. Hanging from the windows of the houses, they managed to create an original and appealing environment. This is a historical and traditional event, that promotes and enhances and attachment of the inhabitants to their land.

Galilei on Show in Florence

For anyone planning a travel to Florence, from 13th March to 30th August the beautiful Palazzo Strozzi will host a very original exhibition dedicated to Galileo Galilei: a tribute to his scientific discoveries, that date back to four centuries ago. The exhibition highlights the steps that led from the Aristotelic-Ptolemaic model of the universe to the Copernican and Galileian one: a very important historical moment, evoked by the presence of numerous finds, instruments, tools, and ancient drawings. The exhibition is open to public everyday from 9 AM to 8 PM, except on Thursday, when it is open from 9 AM to 11 PM.

Therefore the appointment with culture recurs in the city that gave so much to world's culture – and still does. Florence shows itself able to increase the value of its historical local tradition, by exalting and presenting again to the world public the most suggestive aspects of it. An opportunity to experience in first line the ancient tie that links us to our land.
